Aquaria Editor Preview Part 1
Here’s part one in what will hopefully be a series of N parts (N being > 1!) on Aquaria’s editor. We recently decided to work on including our editor tools in the game as well as a Mod framework. For some more tidbits, check these threads.
This first look features the basics of tile editing.
Please excuse my hyperactive play style whilst in the game section. I do love bouncing off the walls frantically while editing. (Er… in the game.)
What else are we doing? Working on the end of the game, secrets and various details… and unfortunately we can’t show any footage of that yet, for obvious reasons.

Still planning to complete this in the Spring? By my calendar, you’ve got two days left…
Regardless, thanks for putting in stuff like this. I suspect I’ll be spending waaaaay too much time with the editor.

Wow, looking good! Looks like it will be a lot of great fun constructing new environments to play around in (and share?)
June 20th, 2007 at 9:03 am
Omg, that’s amazing. I can’t wait to play this fuckin’ game! You guys have my money.
June 20th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Looks pretty fantastic indeed. Very nice little editor.
June 20th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
You make it look so easy…
June 20th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
I see a sailor… @Kevin.
That looks easy, but still, it probably isn’t. Good thing I have two computers so when I DO get it, along with this at whatever time this is released after the actual game, I can refer to the video on how to do some things.
Not very detailed, but still, you don’t need that much detail, do you? I mean, the way you make it…
June 20th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
Hmm..I wonder if I have to deal with any scripting?
June 20th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
You guys are driving me absolutely nuts. Seriously. Stop releasing footage of stuff that I want but can’t yet have. =) Kudos, that looks great. I’m looking very forward to tinkering once I finish the game up.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Looks great! (Particularly the fact that it’s clearly possible to work very quickly once one knows the editor, and that one can switch between editing and playing so easily.) I’m definitely looking forward to getting a chance to play around with this.
A couple of little questions:
1) You moved several of the sprites you placed to the background, but didn’t mention how you did it. Is it an effect (and can effects be stacked?), or some other control?
2) How much control over the z-order of sprites do you have? Is it just “foreground, background (and maybe a few other layers)” with the exact z-order determined when the level is loaded, or can you place a sprite at any specific z-order within a layer?
June 20th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
1) Hey, for now the number keys at the top change “layers”.
If you hold Shift + press a layer number it’ll move the highlighted tile to that layer.
2) There’s about 10 regular layers, and then 3 parallax layers. (and one special layer) Within the layers you can hit Z/X to move a tile to the front of the layer or the back.

Lookin’ good! But… todays the first day of summer! Man, you developers and your “quality”, and your “better gameplay experience”, and your “cool ass secrets for the people”. I’m ravenously slobbering all over my keyboard; knocking some $ off for repairing the bite marks on my computer would be appreciated.
June 21st, 2007 at 3:03 pm
Have you decided an official price yet or are in the process of deciding an official price for the game? I’m guessing that the game will cost around $19.99-$24.99 for the game.
June 21st, 2007 at 4:07 pm
We’re still thinking about the price. We’ll announce it on the blog when we’re 100% sure.

Gotta say, that particle system is looking pretty amazing.
Its one of the things that drew me towards this game after watching the second trailer. Glad to see its been given even more polish now.
June 21st, 2007 at 6:56 pm
WOW, guys! The game looks even BETTER than it did before!
That’s so amazing, I’m glad you’ll be giving us the opportunity to make our own worlds…
Question, though: We’ll be able to share our levels with other owners of the game, right?
A level editor wouldn’t serve much purpose, otherwise.
Amazing work, fellas. Again, I’m truly looking forward to playing this game and pimping it for all I can.
June 21st, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Yeah, you’ll be able to share your stuff. You can just zip it up, and other players can unzip it to their mod directory. Then it’ll show up in the mod selector in the game.
We’re going to let people write their own scripts as well, so eventually it should be possible to make little adventures with it.
We’re thinking of running some level design contests too. It’d be cool to have featured user-made content on the main site, once every thing’s set up.

Really nice. PLEASE - show us more - waiting is like acid slowly eating my body from inside. It burns …
June 22nd, 2007 at 7:52 pm
I love the music Alex. Very relaxing and free…
June 23rd, 2007 at 7:08 am
will players be able to insert their own art as easily as modify levels? I would love to be able to put in my own under water creations.
June 23rd, 2007 at 9:52 am
C’MON RELEASE IT ALREADY! I CANT WAIT TO PLAY! ARRRGGHHHHH!!!!
June 23rd, 2007 at 4:29 pm
patience is a virtue…
and I’d trade a kidney for it right about now.
June 24th, 2007 at 11:05 am
So your nearing completion of the game? At this point, have you already had thoughts of make either a sequel or a prequel to the game?
June 25th, 2007 at 8:59 am
at this point maybe you COULD release the game? and then an additional DL for the editor? but its prolly better just to do it all at once.
June 25th, 2007 at 10:15 am
This game is definitely becoming more and more desirable to me with each update.
As a Mac user I just would like to know if exchanging one’s own levels with Windows users, and vice versa, will be seamless, especially as far as scripting is concerned.
June 25th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
They’ll be interchangeable.

Good post. I learn something new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon on
a daily basis. It’s always useful to read content
