Seven Minutes of Aquaria

I was kinda bored, so I made a lil’ video of wandering around and doing stuff in the game. It’s about seven minutes long!

In this video I hang out in Naija’s cave, take a nap w/ a freaky dream, and fight “Nautilus Prime” to find a new friend.

I also play around with ingredients a little bit. What are ingredients you say? Why, just one of the things we haven’t been talking about yet! Ingredients are part of the Recipe System, and it’s starting to feel pretty good. Naija can cook stuff at home or on the go. (At home she’ll have access to one extra wok.) The items she creates can do all sorts of things, like heal her, protect her, speed her up. And more! But you’ll have to play the game to find out more about it. ;)

COOOOOL! I can’t wait to see the other boss thingys. Nautilus Prime is a pretty cool name. Keep up the good work!

  2. SBKT Says:

Nautilis Prime sounds similar to this one other game I played..

This is a pleasant surprise, though. Cooking is awesome. Good stuff, Alec and Derek. Good stuff.

  3. p3ter_st0ry Says:

Oh, and although I forgot to say it first, nice music, especially for the boss fight; it sounds great!

  4. sayno2quat Says:

Looks like an interesting game. I was about to comment on how easy it would be to get lost, but then I notices that the annoying YouTube logo seems to be covering a map, though the map still doesn’t seem to show a large area.

  5. Edwards Says:

Wow. Pets, cooking, great music, clobbering things with a huge rock… This game just keeps looking more awesome every time you post something.

  6. BMcC Says:

This video makes me feel good inside.

  7. EGM92 Says:

It looks so… amazing, wow it’s very hard to believe that 2 people created this game. Great works guys, you’re really trying my patience though I want the game :D

Your art style, the voice over, just how the effects and everything interacts with each other so perfect.

Great work guys. Now stop slacking and get back to work, We’d like to purchase your game before 2008 :)

  8. Hiro Says:

    DUDE! AWESOME!
That’s really all there is to say at this point. That music rocks so hard! And I like the whole “battle mode” thing going on. Really really looking forward to this. As said before, this game gets better and better each time you guys post something.

  10. EGM92 Says:

I’ve watched the trailer a good 8 times now, I can’t get over the music and how well it’s done. Good job guys. I was wondering if there was an HD quality video of this youtube post? I’d like to see the game in all its glory, the Youtube quality somewhat ruins the entire presentation.

  11. Alec Says:

Added a higher quality link to the post! :)

  12. Saint Says:

    That is very nice.

On a completely different note, I saw you guys are judges in the IGF now… Congrats!

  13. AMDmen Says:

I cant wait to play i love it!!

  14. Al King Says:

    It’s looking (and sounding) beautiful - Can’t wait. :D
Also, any game in which you can smack about schools of fish with a whopping great rock is clearly genius.

  15. John L. Says:

Woah! Thanks for this! I’ve been jonesin for an update from you guys!

  16. EGM92 Says:

    Much appreciated Alec.

  17. Thanius Says:

We NEED this on the Wii! Please, I beg of you! If not published on disc, then as future WiiWare!

  18. FrancescoS Says:

Awesome… I want this on XBox Live Arcade on my 360… I will pay any price…!!!

  19. SBKT Says:

    I just realized.

…How the hell do you cook underwater? And with a WOK, no less.

One thing about the above two comment: We gotta see how big it’d be first, though, right? It probably won’t fit (Due to being pretty large, to my knowledge, while XBLA has a 95MB limit and Wiiware, well, the entire Flash memory is 512MB) unless they expanded it into a disc release and got someone to publish for them, or something.

  20. Alec Says:

Yeah, how would a girl who lives underwater with magic powers, and who can transform into an energy creature to fight improbably large underwater monsters in a fantasy world possibly cook food.

  21. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

    Looking stellar, boys.
    Keep up the good work.

I just got a hard on. Seriously.
    So atmospheric.
And pets, now, too? And COOKING?
    NICE.

    Totally can’t wait…Work hard!

  22. Mitch Says:

This game would be great on the Wii! You should consider it!

  23. Jeremy Says:

I’ve been following this game’s progress for a while, nothing so far has excited me the way this video has. The music and sound are absolutely killer. Can’t wait for it to be done. Now I’m off to play Super Metroid and hang around the Maridia area so I can at least pretend I’m playing Aquaria.

  24. Andrew Says:

About all the people who want to see this on the Wii… Yeah it would be great but, (and I’m just repeating a rumor so go ahead and quote me if I’m wrong), Wii ware will NOT let developers program for the Wii remote, only the classic controller.

That’s just what I heard… so it might be worth looking up…

  25. PHeMoX Says:

7 minutes of total wow!!! Big thanks and can’t wait for the release! :)

@Andrew: The problem is that any game that would have like a standard SNES or Gamecube controller scheme in it could only be played with a Classic Controller anyways, not by using the Wii-mote sideways. I’ve never heard it was impossible to program for the Wii-mote, I’ve only heard it had practical problems in such a scenario. Then again I’ve got no firsthand experience. Still, I think Nintendo would love Aquaria.

  26. Stefan Says:

Holy Frack! Things are looking so cool I had to use the coolest curse word to describe it.

Question: How will this stack up to Eternal Daughter in terms of difficulty and challenge?

  27. Jet Says:

Bored!!!o my goodness! please, during your boredom, just finish the game!!! my whole soul yearns for the release! and i trust that you are working hard so, please, take my excitement and restlessness as a compliment, not some rude call for you to work. The game will be marvelous. every person that i have shown aquaria videos to has been amazed and interested without fail. I can’t wait for it to come out. Thanks guys.

  28. Plaid Phantom Says:

WOW. You guys are seriously gonna push me to get off my backside and actually start making some games, you know that?

Well, until Aquarius comes out, of course.

  29. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

    Crackin’ the whip, we are.
At least it looks to be worth the wait.

  30. Implicid Says:

Great scotts, I wasn’t expecting pets(familiars)! Was there a topic about this in the forums that I didn’t see? I am very anxious to play this game. I’m currently studying Marine Biology and have always wanted to play something like this, thanks alot guys and keep it up.

  31. Carlton Says:

I feel the sudden need to get some Aquaria T-shirts…Do you think you could get Derek to whip some up? :D

  32. Anders Says:

This game looks so beautiful it makes me want to cry. Tears of joy, that is. I’m really looking forward to playing it!

  33. Youta Says:

Hey, just wanted to say that i’m really looking forward to play the game…
It seems AWESOME! That’s the difference between industrial games and independent ones…they’re made with love and care, because it’s something you like and really wanna do…
When’s the game coming out? And…it’s gonna be sold/ordered or free?
    I want it real bad…really do…

Congratulations on your great developing =D

  34. Joel Says:

ARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg, this looks like the best game ever and i’m going out of my head waiting for it!! But I understand you’ve gotta make it perfect first ;)

  35. hat cat Says:

    ya nobody answered me
    T.T
    HOW MUCH DOES AQUARIA COST?
    us dollars

  36. Al King Says:

Industrial games. Like, uh, Cotton Mill 3000.

  37. Al King Says:

hat cat: Chances are, they haven’t decided yet.

  38. Ice_Frog Says:

strange to say it … but … I am looking forward for your another boring day

  39. Hiro Says:

Wait, Ice_Frog? Wasn’t that (one of) the maker of DOTA?
If so then wow; ‘grats to Alec and Derek on such important people as fans.

  40. Ice_Frog Says:

sry for confusing, I am not THAT Ice_Frog - (but Alec and Derek deserve such famous fans)

I always forget to use another nick when talking with someone who does not know history of my nickname

  41. SBKT Says:

Hmm, maybe it might need a change in the future.

Also, I STILL can’t understand cooking IN WATER. I’m not even sure magic could do it.

Imagine her trying to make like, Shrimp fried rice or something. It’d keep floating to the top of the cave…

Hmmm, floating… In a bubble? Maybe..

Okay, I SORT of understand how it might work now.

I keep forgetting, did you construct the entire engine from scratch?

  42. Redemption Says:

Forget the logic, its just fun. Plus the fact that she cooks with a Wok underwater is just plain hilarious.

  43. Alec Says:

    SBKT’s on the right track.

The Wok is just what we call one of the food holding slots. Its not a Wok in the actual game world.

…and yeah, its my own engine. :)

  44. Sokpuppet Says:

    SBKT;
    seems easy enough, to me…

    supercavitating stove?

  45. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

    $20-$25, huh?
That’s a real sweet spot right there. I wouldn’t have an regrets buying this game if it meets the standards we’ve seen thus far.

  46. Rz. Says:

it’s pretty sad that people think Ice_Frog is an important person, when all he did was steal a stolen game and subsequently steal a lot of material from other maps. the only thing he did right was rake in a bunch of money from tournaments. gggggggggg

  47. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

I sent Jenna an e-mail a while back telling her how I adore her voice work from what we have heard thus far.
“There’s a fine line between death and orgasm…”
Ohhhh, I LOL. It’s so true — I imagine voice actors much feel very awkward when it comes to stuff like that.

Anyway, she seems to be very proud to be a part of this creation, and I’m sure I’ll be very proud to be someone who gets to play it. =)

  48. Blanc dans noir Says:

You developers should be proud of yourselves. I not only want this game, but I DESIRE it. It looks and feels so refreshing, and with what I would definitly call memorable music, expecially the boss tune. Stunningly beautiful and some of the best pixels I’ve seen.

Keep up the good work and by god, you have to let me play it soon!

  49. Joseph Says:

    AHHHH I want MOREEEEEEEE!!!!

  50. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

    By God, you certainly do.

Would it be possible to get a demo of some kind out there to satiate our appetites as we wait for the final version to be refined some more?

  51. SBKT Says:

I read that topic in the forum, and I’d be overjoyed, but from what they said, we shouldn’t hold our breaths. Unless we can hold it for two weeks straight and put the entire two weeks on Youtube. Which would be awesome if they let you do that.

Now, I was thinking about the X-play’s lateness measure thing, where they used Starcraft: Ghost, Duke Nukem forever, and Twilight Princess as examples.

  52. Bartimaeus Says:

Please let me beta test! Please!

  53. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

    Aw, that’s too bad…
I’d really like to get this one before Thanksgiving Break. That’d be perfect timing.

Though Christmas break would work, too, but by then I’ll have the new Smash Bros., so my time will be largely occupied…

  54. Redemption Says:

Can we have an update please, something to keep us occupied for another aquaria-less month?

    Thanks.

  55. Alexander Says:

Yeah, that’s if we ever get to play it though…

  56. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

Can we be looking forward to this game in time for Christmas?
The big game I was hoping to play during Christmas break has been delaed to February, so it’d be great to have this to sink into instead.

  57. TeeGee Says:

Simply wonderful. I love the fact that there seems to be so much optional depth to the game. Exploration, pets, recipes… cool.

What’s absolutely striking for me is the wonderful control scheme. You seem to achieve a plenty of nice moves with mouse-only. And the way you connect some magical stuff to use powers is great! Really, a game designer’s wet dream ;).

  58. SBKT Says:

I know it’s gonna be a bother, but, can ANYTHING be posted yet because it’s been over a month, and I’m an impatient jerk.

Well, I don’t mean to, I’m still just really excited. Maybe I should quote an RvB line (To pass the time or something), but the results won’t be pretty if they care about what we say.

Anyways, onto a real topic. Do you expect all the bosses to work in the same megaman-esque style, or are some going to be unique to the point where you might not see the same move twice in a single play?

  59. Andrew Says:

If there aren’t any updates on the site, that only means they are busy working on Aquaria… right?

  60. SBKT Says:

    That, or they died.

Maybe Halo 3 killed them, with it’s massive buzz effect.

Cut out “buzz” and then we get the name of another upcoming game. Well, upcoming here, anyways. Wasn’t Mass Effect supposed to come out a month and a half ago?

  61. passing thru Says:

    has this game drowned itself?

  62. Alec Says:

Are you guys cool with us taking time to finish the game properly, or would you rather we released it unfinished?

  63. Andrew Says:

    Well spoken my friend.

    ;)

  64. Czechman Says:

Well… I think the firts option will be better-finish game properly but also you can post us something.Maybe every month one article so that we can say that they are still alive.(That is only my view)

  65. Derek Says:

    Patience, guys. Patience. ;)

Each one of these posts takes at least a couple hours of game time away, and I don’t think you’d be too happy with us just updating to say that we’re alive.

  66. SBKT Says:

Wow, now I feel like an ass. I just like knowing what’s going on, and I would think a couple hours out of every month to do one would be fine.

Basically, no updates for one or two months feels like those awkward silences in movies or something, where everyone is afraid to say anything, but then someone just coughs and makes a comment on the weather and they feel really weird.

    Did that even make sense?

  67. Andrew Says:

OK everybody. We got to remember that there are just two developers on this game (albeit they are god-like). In order to make the greatest game of all time, it takes the hardest work of all time… makes sense.

This is more than just another video game.
This is more than just another award winning video game.
This is more than just another IGF Seamus McNally Grand prize winning video game.
    This is Aquaria.

I have been a fan of Alec’s work since his early days at Zaphire.ca and I guarantee you all that he and Derek are (behind the scenes) working very hard on finishing Aquaria perfectly. They are probably working harder than ever, thus the sparse updates.

I know everybody wants to see updates and follow along the creation process of a masterpiece, but the Devs are making it clear. They are going to finish the game, and they need us to have faith in that. They are very focused in this stage of development as they need to make sure everything is perfect. I know the excitement is killing some of you, but we all just got to hang in there and support the developers.

    Nobody likes a nag.

  68. Derek Says:

    Thanks, Andrew! :)

@SBKT: Alec is also very active on the forums, taking time out of the day to answer people’s questions. The only “awkward silence” is on the front page of our site.

We also don’t always have good stuff to post about that wouldn’t take too much time out of our development schedule. We could just talk about what we’re doing, but a lot of it would spoil some aspect of the game we want you to experience firsthand when you play it. What’s left we’ve already told you, would (as I said) take too long to explain properly, or isn’t really that interesting.

In conclusion, the Bit Blot policy is that we don’t do automated posts about how we’re “Still alive! Still working!” We either write about interesting things that we want to talk to you about, or we work on the damn game. ;)

  69. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

Yea, I have to say, I’d like to see some more bits about the game, but as long as I know it’s still being worked on, (and I have faith that it is with utmost passion and care because this seems to be a personal work more than a for-profit one) I am perfectly content with waiting.

I have my hopes and wishes as far as a release date, but I’m more than willing to wait until the makers feel it’s good enough to put out — as long as they realize that it will never be ENTIRELY perfect, as no game is…

Shigeru Miyamoto put it best when he said,
“A delayed game can become a great game, but a bad game is bad forever.”

  70. Alec Says:

    Thanks Andrew! :D

The main framework of the game has been done for a few months now. i.e. You could play through the entire game, hit all the main story points, encounter all the main game play elements. But that didn’t mean that the game was done. These extra months of adding details and tweaking things is really paying off, as the game is much improved.

One thing that I think people don’t realize, is even when you work really hard and get something into the game, its still not done yet. You have to see how it works within the context of the whole game. Later it may become obvious how to improve it, and that may involve taking it out, replacing it with something else or rebuilding it.

Another thing that I don’t think people realize is that not releasing the game is painful for us too. We’ve been working on this for about 2 years straight now! I don’t think I’ve taken more than a full day off from working on the game in all that time. (yea, I think I even did some work on Christmas day) This game has been our lives for all that time, and while we love working on it, we’d also love to be able to work on new games! (we have a pile that we’ve accumulated over the last year or so and I’m really eager to be able to work on them - provided Aquaria sells well enough that our company can survive)

It would be a huge mistake to release Aquaria before its ready - for the fans and for ourselves.

  71. Sok Says:

    *coughStallingforachristmassreleasecough*

In all seriousness, though, it would just as huge a mistake to delay the game for too long.

  72. Alec Says:

Naw, we’d never stall. If we could release right now, I so would. I don’t know if it would be wise for an indie game to launch at Christmas… you’d have to compete with a ton of mainstream games.

It’d be a mistake to delay for too long, but you can’t release something that is unfinished. I think our only mistake was not judging the time it would take to finish properly. I think on the next project we won’t bother announcing a release date until we’re really close. Too many people wet their pants over it.

  73. Alec Says:

Actually, let me explain where we’re at in detail, cause I’m betting some people still don’t get it.

    < Begin miniRant >

Derek and I feel like we’re really close to finishing the game itself. A couple weeks ago Derek did a full play through of the game and took detailed notes. Since then we’ve been going through his notes implementing his suggested changes and improvements. Just a few days ago we started a new round of testers. Our testing team is very small, so I’m rolling out the betas to one tester a week or so, to make sure that I can fix little things as soon as they come up and have them in in time for the next tester to take a crack at it.

So far its going great, the testers that have played the new version so far are finding it way better than the last test version. I’m so happy and relieved by that, I can’t tell you how good it feels. We worked so hard to address the major complaints and so far we’ve resolved them! We’re really happy with the changes too, we managed to find ways to do them that are true to what we want the game to be.

There’s still details in the game that need work. Cut-scenes that need improvements, some areas of the game that could use a little more content to bring them up to par with all the others, tweaking the balance. I’m sure there are still small bugs lingering in there that’ll take some more testers to dig up. Some places/creatures are still missing sound effects. I’m planning on writing a couple more music tracks to flesh out a few areas/bosses.

But even then there’s still stuff to add to the game. If I decide to release it without full joystick support, I’m sure I’m going to have people yelling and screaming at me like rabid animals. ;) So I have to add proper key + joystick mapping at some point, and its going to take a lot.

After that, I hope I have some time to spend on the level and animation editor… making them a bit more user friendly and writing up some documentation for the scripting engine. But really I can’t put that too high on my priority list, and its probably something I can work on improving after the game is out. (although I’m sure people will still scream at me about it)

Once that stuff is all done and we’ve gone through enough testing, there’s still more to do. We have to set up a site, get our commercial stuff going, create a demo version and test it (its going to take a lot, because we have to separate the demo content from the full game content and it ain’t organized folks), prepare all the marketing materials and the like.

I’m not even going to try to estimate how long it’ll take, because if we end up being short even a day, people will be whining and moaning and insulting us.

But I’m really happy with where we’re at, I’m glad we took the time and effort to look hard at the game and improve it.

At this point either you can trust us and sit tight, or GTFO and let us finish the game in peace. :D

  74. BMcC Says:

The boys are working really super crazy hard, folks. The game has come SO very far, it’s sometimes hard to believe. Patience! :)

  75. Danopian Says:

Keep on keepin’ on, Bit-Blot. Finish the game in peace.

  76. Czechman Says:

I think some peolpe are afraid that it may finish as a Duke Nukem Forever. That is good to make it perfect but at the expense of itselfs releasing is bad like at Duke Nukem Forever-they are still polishing but it is anticipated nearly ten years.(and yeah that is a good idea to say release date when you are realy close to it or maybe once the release date is out already you can rewrite the date to later(a mean delay it-it is normaly does))
    (Hope you will understand)

  77. Derek Says:

Trust me, Czechman, it’s not even close to becoming vaporware! The key differences between this and DF being that 3d Realms has never released more than a handful of screenshots of that game and have gone through multiple teams and game engines. Am I right?

If you read Alec’s post, you can see exactly where we’re at. We’re quite close.

I do understand your position, and I’m glad you’re excited! However, please, in turn, try to understand *our* position. :)

  78. SBKT Says:

I am NOT going to consider you guys gods like these guys(They seem to think of you as ALL-POWERFUL. Psychologically, that’s not healthy at all.), but I WILL stop bugging you, if you clearly asked. And you did, so I’m gonna stop.

Now that you asked nicely, I should stop.

    Go Aquaria!

  79. Melly Says:

    Eagerly awaiting demo.

    With sweaty hands.

    Go Aquaria!

    Kay I’ll stop now.

  80. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

Sounds like you guys still have a good chunk of work to go, huh?
Well, good luck. I’m sure all of this extra time will make the difference between it being a good game and a great game.
It’s astounding the amount of time that needs to go into something to bring it up just those couple extra notches at the top, isn’t it? But in the end, it’s worth it.

I look forward to seeing/hearing more, whenever you guys are ready.
In the meantime, work hard, and good luck.

  81. D3stiny_Sm4sher Says:

It’s true — Mario Galaxy, for example, was pushed back an entire year, and the critical appeal is high, all because that time was taken to polish it up nice and shiny.

  82. Chris Says:

yo whats taking so long? i need some updates, info!

  83. DaVince Says:

Wow. Lots of hype, I see. This game DOES look good though.

  84. Alec Says:

    Sorry, what hype?

  85. DaVince Says:

It might be the 90 comments of “whoa, amazing!”. ;)

  86. Alec Says:

So people looking forward to the game is “hype”?

I’m trying to figure out what you mean… a couple people have said the game is “over hyped” and I have no clue what they’re talking about. There are thousands of mainstream games with massive ad campaigns that are shoved down people’s throats on a daily basis… and when our game gets mentioned favorably by a couple sites and some people say they’re looking forward to it, suddenly its “over hyped”.

I mean… in the mainstream case they paid lots of money to get their ads in all sorts of magazines, tv, websites etc… in our case people like the way the game looks and are saying that. I don’t see how that amounts to being hype.

  87. Saint Says:

I never did like the term “overhyped”. “Hype” is more or less a modern version of “hyperbole”, which in itself means exaggeration, so overhyped would mean overly exaggerated… as if it was possible to be just exaggerated enough when it comes to pure information. Ah well, it’s just semantics and as long as people agree somewhat of the meaning of a word, It’s really pointless where it originally came from.

To be fair though, Alec, hype doesn’t have to be paid advertising. Less professional game journalists have a tendency to be overly excited about things, I for one thought the news coverage of Crysis severly exaggerated the qualities of the game about a year and a half ago, when they only had a few leaked screenshots to speculate about. And we all remember Edge calling Rise of the Robots the “Game of the Future” back when.

That being said, I don’t think the news coverage of Aquaria qualifies as “Hype”.

  88. Alec Says:

That’s just the thing, I’m not aware of any news stories ranting about Aquaria, it basically amounts to either coverage from IGF or bloggers who think the game looks promising basically saying “it looks promising”. I haven’t seen anyone making outrageous claims about it. We also haven’t spent any money on advertising and we haven’t done much promotion yet other than making some videos of features from the game and talking about it on our blog.

For our own part, we always talk about the game as accurately as possible. I don’t want people getting insane expectations about it.

  89. Redemption Says:

Alec, I really doubt there was anything intentionally malicious about DaVince’s post. I’m sure that what he meant by hype was enthusiasm for the game -as opposed to an excess of undeserved excitement.

  90. Alec Says:

It was more that it reminded me of other comments I had seen, and then I went off on a rant about those. :)

  91. Gio Says:

You’ve been working o this game for quite a while. You’ve delayed it many times, but you know what? That is a good thing, because that allows the project from being good, to being astonishing!

  92. Andrew Says:

To be fair, Aquaria has only been delayed once but your point is still absolutely correct. Go Aquaria!
