Knytt Stories is out!
And boy is it great. I'm in love.
Thanks for the heads up! I had totally forgotten (mind you, not having internet does that) Finished it, played and finished the official expansion pack, Played the third party pack although only finished one adventure (those are fiendish I tell you!) And then I replayed Knytt

Frankly, I enjoyed Within A Deep Forest more than Knytt. I loved Knytt's atmosphere and the little animations in the background, but it wasn't really sufficient to sustain my interest long enough to complete the thing. Still... * KingAl runs off to play Knytt Stories

I didn't really enjoy the game, well, it was ejoyable, but way too short....then I discovered the expansion packs. :p
A strange dream is far longer and really amazing. Can't wait to finish it and complete the rest of the levels.

Doesn't work in Wine for me. Shame, because I was really looking forward to it.

It's things like this that make me still use Windows, despite its other flaws.

Hasn't it been freeware for a while?
Also, does anyone know some other good games like Aquaria, Cave Story, La-Mulana and Eternal Daughter? Or in other words, a freeware Metroidvania game?

I don't know why, but I never got around to playing Akujii. I'll have to try it now though, thanks for reminding me about it. How long does the game take?

Eheh... Yeah they are just illegal. I don't think anyone has added Savage to this topic, right? Savage was originally comercial but it has been released for free by the developers hoping for more popularity for Savage 2. (If you like savage 1 and want to share the indie love you can preorder Savage 2 ) In savage the idea is that two teams fight each other online in a battle to destroy the opposition's main building. The beast team's main building is the lair and the human's main building is the stronghold. Each team has a commander who plays an RTS game, with teching, building and commanding units. Every other person on the team plays a 3rd/1st person hack-and-slash/shooter game. When the commander gives an order you get a waypoint to go towards, which you can obey or disregard. It's up to you. http://www.s2games.com/savage/index.php?page=savageindex

They are a gray area as most roms are not copyrighted, but has anybody mentioned lord monarch online? http://www.falcom.com/monarch/index_e.html"Lord Monarch is a game where you try and expand your territory. Winning strategies include analyzing the layout of game maps, the flow of game, waiting for the right time to attack, and withstanding reprisals ... Lord Monarch has all the indispensable elements for a dynamic game. " -developers was a snes game but it never was sold in america, now it is a freeware game. I wish i had a pic to put up but it has nothing special in graphics. The gameplay and complexity of the strategy is what draws you into it.

www.adom.deADOM is a Rogue-like game. It is also one of the most difficult games I have ever played. A friend and I played it non-stop for about two years and we could never get farther than about level 25 of the main dungeon. Superb amounts of depth to the game, and it's definitely a game you could play for the rest of your life.
